the creative process and previewing a "demo"

Right, this is GREYSKIIN signing on for a second week of one|five. It is a weekly podcast that I'm going to do every Sunday, and it's just 15 minutes of conversation, 15 minutes of chat.

(00:00:14):

So yeah, if you're here, thanks for being here. Actually, last week it was kind of cool to hear people's responses. A lot of people DMed me about our chat, which was fun because then it wasn't just a monologue or me rambling to myself or just, you know, adding white noise to the ether.

(00:00:39):

So let's get into it. First things first, and I'm always going to give you the music updates first because I feel...obligated to. If you're here, you're probably here because I make music.

(00:00:50):

So updates. I'm steadily working on this - Actually, I was supposed to have the poster finished Friday. It is Sunday, and I'm going to hunker down and finish it. It's 90% done. It's just like...The final 10% is the hardest part. I have to pull the concept of this visual together. Do that, make the announcement.

(00:01:10):

Yeah, I'm just excited about it because it's my first headlining show and all the pieces are slowly coming together. I'm really excited about the two artists that are sharing the bill with me. Uh, I'm a huge fan of both of them and I'm stoked they're playing. They both like hit me in different parts of my heart, brain, um, little artist animal thing.

I'm also having my friend Jay shoot visuals for it. And Jay's really, uh, a fun new addition to my life like creatively and just all around because I produce, write and pretty much do everything myself um it can get kind of uh lonely and I won't say uninspiring because I think of creating like shitting.

(00:02:16):

If you're having a problem shitting, you probably need to eat. If you're not shitting, you're not eating. So just eat. That's a simple fix for that. So I wouldn't say uninspiring, but I just like get tired of hearing my own fucking voice, seeing my own fucking ideas all the time. And I have long wanted some sort of collaborator, you know, like a Paul McCartney-John Lennon vibe, you know, ping pong ideas off one another.

And then Jay, thanks to, shout out Peanut Butter Friends that introduced me to Jay. And Jay just fucking gets it. We can go out with one $40 light and get some shots that are just incredible. So cool.

(00:03:04):

Just straight out of the camera. I really don't even have to edit any of the photos we do. But sometimes I do just because I want to make them look like they're from different sets. So I'll just like throw a gradient map over something and be like, okay, this doesn't look like it was all taken the same day. Cool.

(00:03:19):

But yeah, no, Jay is, I have so much admiration and respect for them. We've only done still work together, but yeah, we're going to go into moving pictures together and I'm excited about that.

So yeah, I think those are the music updates oh sorry i'm i'm lying i'm lying so much to you i actually the plan for this week is to share a demo so uh here we go

I call it a demo. And funny enough, I don't really believe in demos. Like in the formal sense when people are like, “oh yeah, we demoed it. Now we're going to cut the real vocals.”

(00:05:37):

Usually I feel like whatever you're feeling at that moment, as long as the lyrics are right, you're not going to feel exactly that same way again. And you probably should just keep those original vocals.

(00:05:53):

So yeah, demo. I don't have any verses on this yet, obviously. I just have semblances of an idea of a verse. Sometimes things just come to me and I just riff off of them. And not every song is supposed to be a song, which I've learned recently.

(00:06:13):

I used to really only record a song once it was fully written in my head and once I fully had the idea for where I was going to go with production. because I was like, yeah, I only want to work on what's good. I don't want to waste my time. But then someone actually, when I went on tour, when I played bass with King Isis, the guitarist was actually a musician that I had heard one of her songs before and didn't put two and two together until the third rehearsal.

I was like, oh my God you're you literally made this song that i fucking love um but estelle - like i i was driving a lot in the car um on on the road like i i would take the driving shifts and estelle was like shotgun and we would just talk late into the night and she was talking about um how she would just like just make shit to make shit without a goal in mind.

(00:07:18):

And then she'll get really surprised when she happens upon some treasure. And I'm like, oh yeah, I'm only going to sit down if I know there's treasure. And she was like, oh, what about the happy accidents though? And I was like, Damn, so true, so true.

(00:07:38):

So I've been doing that more recently, like just sitting down and making shit with only one line in mind. I would literally write the whole song before ever sitting down and opening my computer, ever tracking vocals.

(00:07:56):

I was just thinking about this, like being calmly obsessed. That's been kind of a phrase that's been in my head the past couple of weeks. You know, like when you're, so there's like the usual obsess, like I need it or I'll die. Like I absolutely need it. I can't survive without it. I'm nothing without this.

(00:08:16):

But then there's like this other type of obsession that I've been experiencing recently where it's like, hmm. I'm complete as a person. I'm good. I have cool things going on. I got friends. I'm chilling. So I don't need you but I do think you're really cool, and I do choose you, and I choose you today. I'll probably choose you tomorrow.

(00:08:47):

It's like obsession, but calm, which is definitely why I need to work on the verses. Because I don't know, I was just riffing. I was just saying syllables that sounded good in the verses. um which is why i start off with like the bad news is i can't live without you that's like the antithesis of the song the whole point of the song is like i i'm

(00:09:14):

i'm good like yeah just calmly obsessed not not deathly obsessed not wholly obsessed just like just like a calm like a cool like healthy obsession with you

(00:09:25):

more on the creative process um and some things i don't mention because i figure like oh everyone knows that or everyone does that but apparently not like I mentioned or was talking about hunting and gathering with someone last week and they were intrigued and that was new to them. So I'll mention it here just in case they could add to anyone else's creative process.

But I'm very much in hunting and gathering mode right now, which is... it kind of goes back to like my shitting eating thing before,

(00:09:56):

like people talk about writer's block. Um, and I don't like, I, I acknowledge that some other people experience it. I don't really believe in it cause I'm, I don't know, just like you eat and then you shit.

(00:10:10):

And if you're blocked, that probably means your body's still digesting what you ate. So I'm eating. I'm hunting and gathering. I'm watching a bunch of films because I love film.

(00:10:23):

Films are like, I think probably my entry points to attachment to art. I loved music from a very young age, but it didn't become... When I listen to a really good song, it makes me think of a film. And if I see a good film, it makes me want to write a song. They are very much interconnected for me.

(00:10:58):

I think the first film that was super significant to me was Amelie. uh and it's probably because i had such a huge crush on audrey tattoo and then there was a girl in real life who like looked like walmart audrey tautou like she was like audrey tautou but like fucked up teeth um plus her heart uh so hunting and

gathering i yeah got on movie and i've just been um like deep diving watching different films and um Finding different emotions, different feelings, different sounds, different colors. Like, oh, that's a pretty color. Let me write that down. Oh, that's nice. Let me write that down.

(00:11:40):

Just kind of mapping out the way that I want the next record to feel. And when I say the next record, I mean two records ahead because my next record is already done already.

(00:11:50):

I mean, I'm not finished with the production. There's a lot of live instrumentation I want to add, but it's done, and you haven't heard any of it. Sorry, I'm being selfish. I could have previewed some of that here, but no, I wanted to kind of lead you astray.

(00:12:07):

If I could recommend any film, something that I think is going to be the most influential color-wise, because I experience things as colors a lot of the time,

(00:12:18):

Omen. It is an African film and i could not really wrap my head around the plot which i think partially was cultural difference but also a lot of the people who were reviewing it were saying um that it got similar reviews at the film festivals that it premiered at so maybe me maybe not just me um visually striking. I know that in the States, we've gotten back to the 2000s kind of aesthetics.

(00:12:47):

Like we're very chrome, blue, green kind of color palettes. And I suppose that's in the States and possibly in the UK. But if you reach outside of that, in Omen, it's got some queer elements, but it is not a queer film. It has a lot of supernatural elements.

(00:13:10):

And they've just got some deep purples and some...dark maroon browns, and these pale, not chrome, but faded greens. And it's just a level of bereft, morose, and earnest, seriousness, that I think could be a nice note in a project that belongs in our future landscape. But just really well done.

(00:13:52):

I actually, I enjoyed it visually more than I did Nosferatu. I saw Nosferatu last night and a little disappointed. I was expecting more visually from it. It was funny at parts, absurd at other parts. Lily Rose Depp actually did a really good job. Blah, blah, blah. Nosferatu, blah, blah, blah. Robert Eggers, blah, blah, blah.

(00:14:19):

Yeah, just expected more and was pleasantly surprised with Omen. Nosferatu? Not going on my mood board for anything, unfortunately. Which I actually probably fortunately, because I never want to have the same shit on my mood board as everyone else. I want to feel special. I want to feel different.

(00:14:40):

So if Nosferatu is in the zeitgeist, I don't want that to be part of what I'm referencing, because then my shit's going to sound like everyone else's. And I want the different recipe. I want my stuff to taste unique.
